Tenei: Bringing together nature, people, and a bright future

The village of Tenei is located in the southern part of the Nakadori region of Fukushima Prefecture, and a watershed runs through the center. The eastern part has a Pacific climate with little snowfall, while the western part has a Japan Sea climate that can bring up to two meters of snow in the winter. The area around Hatori Lake is an expansive tourist area that has been designated as Okawa Hatori Prefectural Natural Park.

History / Culture

The village of Tenei is the site of the endlessly flowing Wakui Springs, which are protected by an ancient legend that says that polluting them would bring floods to the land. It is also a sacred place for performing rainmaking rituals, and there are records of mass prayers taking place here during the mid-Edo period. The springs are a natural monument and also designated as an Important Cultural Property of the village.

The village of Tenei is a great place to enjoy hot springs. It has been a popular destination, particularly for older people seeking better health, ever since its Futamata Hot Spring, Iwase Yumoto Hot Spring, and Tenei Hot Spring facilities opened--as it is renowned for its many types of hot spring water, each with their own health-promoting properties. In May 2016, the Ministry of the Environment designated Tenei as a National Hot Spring Health resort.
The surrounding area also offers abundunt natural beauty. including Hatori Lake, Mt. Futamata, and the Hatori Plateau, as well as skiing, golfing, and a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities that can be enjoyed year-round.

The three top produce brands out of Tenei are Tenei Naganegi leeks, Tenei-mai rice, and Tenei Yacón--all of them high-quality specialty products that take advantage of the area's rich natural setting. They've also enjoyed plenty of media exposure lately, earning them a huge following that spans the entire country. You can buy them in town at the Kinosato and Hatoriko Kogen roadside stations.
